Slavery, Memory, and the University
The Avalon Project investigates the history of the Avalon plantation and the enslaved people who lived and labored on land that is now the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus.
As a Student Researcher on the project, Alexis conducts archival research at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library and supporting field research to reconstruct the history of the Avalon plantation and identify its enslaved residents. She hopes this work will one day feed into the Locating Slavery's Legacies database (LSLdb), a growing record designed to make this history searchable and citable rather than lost to informal memory. She collaborates with UAH faculty toward a peer-reviewed publication on the project's findings.
